About Toto
Toto was founded in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also well-known studio musicians with Boz Scaggs) and singer/bassist Bobby Kimball. Taking their name from the Latin word that means "all encompassing," the group was determined to explore all styles of music.
In 1981 the third album by Toto Turn Back was a flop However, they resurface with their fourth release Isolation which contains two hits including the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour makes them a household name around the globe.
After a brief hiatus, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. It is a departure from the ballads of previous albums and also includes some heavy rock. This album was their first album to go platinum in North America.
During the recording process for the fifth album The group loses its manager and is faced with financial problems. They decide to change their name and record a new album with the new producer. The lead vocalist Fergie Frederiksen leaves the band and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman and gives the band much-needed boost.
In 1999, the band release Mindfields and embarks on an extensive tour across the globe. After a few months in Europe they come to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a brief break, Toto resumes recording and goes on to record their first live album, Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes an original cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe in response to the band's cover of their hit Africa on a recent tour. Toto's touring band is rounded out by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.

After Isolation, Toto took a break from the spotlight and stepped back from the stage. This gave the members of the group the opportunity to pursue their own projects. In 1996, the band returned for a tour and album. This was the first time all of the original members were on stage together in over 10 years.
The next year, Toto toured with Ringo Starr's All Starr Band. This was the last time all of Toto's original members were together on stage at the same time. After that, the group broke up again. However, Toto reunited in 2010 to benefit the ALS Foundation. This was the first time that all original Toto members appeared on stage together in over 31 years. In addition to the original members keyboardist Greg Tambu filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate filled in for Shem Von Schroeck.

Despite their acclaim, the band faced several difficulties in their later years. In 2002, keyboardist David Paich and drummer Greg Phillinganes were forced to take a medical leave of absence. Shem von Schröeck was brought in to replace him however the band was not the same without Paich or Phillinganes. In 2008, Toto decided to take off from touring following changes to the lineup and a disappointing string of releases. The group returned to touring in 2012 following the release of the album 40 Trips Around The Sun.
The album was a return to the band's top form and the tour that came with it featured sold-out shows in North America and Europe. The reunion of Toto gathered momentum after the return of bassist Shem Von Schroeck and guitarist Steve Lukather.
